YOUNG THEATRE ARTISTS SATIRIZE PHILIPPINE MASS MEDIA IN A BRAVE NEW PLAY
Dulaang Kalay, a new theatre organization by young theatre enthusiasts from Kalayaan College in Quezon City, in cooperation with the University of the Philippines Speech Communication Association (UP SPECA), presents a new play entitled ‘Series Finale: Saan Hahantong Ang Tagpong Ito?!’ as their inaugural offering.
‘Series Finale’ is a social satire written by two young and promising theatre artists William Elvin Manzano (Lyricist/Composer of Dulaang UP’s Rizal X and UP Dulaang Laboratoryo’s Cyrano) and Katte Sabate (Dramaturg/Headwriter of Dulaang UP’s Rizal X), and touches the media’s manipulation of the Philippine masses through escapist TV shows and movies, commercial products that give hopes of better living, and sensationalist news programs. It follows actresses Helena San Diego (Janine Santos / Erika Estacio), Venus San Juan (Nicole Roxanne Aldiosa / Dreps Tatad) and a network representative known as Tita Cheng (Jules dela Paz / Toji Salinas), as the final episode of a cheesy and melodramatic soap opera about their own careers called ‘Sa Langit Ang Tagpuan Ng Mga Bituin’ is aired. Outside of the fictional world, serious issues on the harsh realities of life in the Philippines surface but are either covered up or violently silenced.
Featuring an ensemble of fresh faces and budding theatre actors, Original Songs and Direction by William Elvin Manzano, Live Music Accompaniment by Marvin Dizon, Choreography by Delphine Buencamino, Lighting Design by Meliton Roxas, Photography and Poster Design by Dino Dimar, and a production team of Kalayaan College students, ‘Series Finale’ ensures an energetic and eye-opening experience that will provide a new perspective to Philippine Theatre followers.
‘Series Finale: Saan Hahantong Ang Tagpong Ito?!’ will be performed at Vision 21, Crossroad 77, #77 Mother Ignacia Avenue, Quezon City on December 5 (Monday, 7 PM), 9 (Friday, 3 PM and 7 PM), 11 (Sunday, 4 PM and 6 PM), 16 (Friday, 10 AM) and 18 (Sunday, 4 PM and 7 PM).
